sweet and simple

None of my babies have been fans of swaddling...but after they are all fresh from a bath, I like to keep them naked and wrap them up as they fall asleep in my arms. And then I just kiss them, smell them, and snuggle them as long as I can :)

Thanks for endulging me on my overload of newborn pictures. It was fun to capture a bit of our newborn Hazel. I know that I will love looking back on this special time when she was so tiny and life was so sweet and simple.

Sisters

One morning while Sawyer was at Preschool, I had about 30 minutes and decided to try and take a few pictures of the girls together. As I went through them, oh my goodness sakes, what a treasure they are to me! My girls! Aspen is so in love with Hazel, it melts my heart. She wants to hold her, cuddle her, kiss her, and see her any time she has the chance. She is still little, though, to trust with her, so I am always at her side (or the other way around?) with our baby Hazel. One way we decided she could safely hold the baby herself is on her legs. So, that's where I put her and hoped to grab a few images to remember these days when our girls are still so new to each other. It always makes me smile to hear Aspen start singing to her sister. It's almost like she's a little doll - but Aspen does understand she's even better than any doll. She's her sister...

And OH Brother - we can't forget our Big Brother! When I picked Sawyer up and he came home and saw what I had been doing, he decided for once to let me take a picture of him with his new baby sister (he is not fond of my papparazzi ways). He gave me about 30 seconds and I at least got one good one. He has been oh so gentle and sweet with Hazel. Aspen, of course, is his best friend. What lucky girls to have a big brother like Sawyer!

Maybe one day soon I'll get around to actually taking some newborn pics of our sweet Hazel. In the meantime, I'm so glad I got these - now, which one do I frame?

One week old!

As of Friday night, Hazel was one whole week old! I love the feeling that a new baby brings - Hazel is so fresh to our world, and our family, yet it feels like she's been with us forever, and now we can't imagine our world without her.

We lucked out with gorgeous weather on that day, so to celebrate (and get out of the house! woo hoo!) we packed up the kids, and Grammie and I took them all to the beach for a picnic lunch and some fun in the sand and on the playground.

Admittedly not looking my best ever, but hey, I don't really care - I just had a baby and in general I fail to care much about things like hair and makeup - especially when I can take in the beauty of my surroundings. I'll give myself a couple of frumpy-ish weeks before I start worrying about those girlish things again :)

Beach Baby!

Grammie got to see one of the reasons why I LOVE Seattle - such pretty beaches! And so many soooo close to our house! Gotta live it up while we can!

Happy One Week Birthday, Hazel!

We sure love having you with us!

Celebrations // Sawyer turns four

One week ago, Sawyer turned FOUR!

We knew we might have a new baby, or else be super close to my due date, so we elected to keep his actual birthday quite simple. I asked him what he wanted - and more than anything else, he wanted a cake with a big T-rex on top! Having had Hazel 4 days prior, I elected to do a cake from a box this year - and let him pick out what flavor and what kind of frosting etc. He was really excited about it! It may not be my prettiest cake ever, but it sure was a ROARing hit with our birthday boy!

He was really excited that for his birthday he got to bring a treat to school. Daddy stayed up really late the night before making dinosaur sugar cookies for his class to devour. He got a surprise phone call from his buddy, Max - I think it's the first time anyone has called just for Sawyer. A friend from church also called to wish him a Happy Birthday (thanks, Rob Noll!) It always warms my heart to know there are other people in the world who are thoughtful and loving towards my children. At home, we pretty much had cake and ice-cream, and presents, of course. Sawyer was really excited to wake up and find that Grammie had arrived very late the previous evening, too!

Sawyer had told me for a long time that he really wanted his new baby sister to be born on his birthday, so she could wear a big bow and be his special present. I think he was genuinely a bit disappointed he didn't get to share his birthday with her. What a sweet big brother! He informed me a few days ago that the NEXT baby would maybe get to share his birthday. Hmm...

We planned his party for this coming weekend...crossing our fingers for decent weather. He said this morning, "isn't my birthday usually summertime?" I had to laugh. We've had our fair share of gray JUNE-uary days. Every now and then we get a wiff of summer, but it hasn't hit yet in full force.

Who would've guessed we'd be so lucky that before our first baby turned four we'd have two more beautiful children? We are so blessed!

while we waited to come home...

The night Hazel was born - at 6:59pm - the Doc said I could go home at midnight, if I wanted. I totally should have taken her up on it! We were still at the Birth Center/Hospital less than 24 hours, but it sure felt like FOREVER. Here are a few notes from while we were waiting to come home...

I didn't get a wink of sleep all night long. It was all my own fault - nothing (well, everything) to do with Hazel. She slept sweetly all night long, nursed a couple of times maybe - but mostly, I was just SO excited! A new baby is WAY better than Christmas, but that's how I felt, just so pumped and excited, I couldn't put her down. So, we rested together in my bed most of the night and heard the birds chirping bright and early the next morning. I was STARVING, so ordered food as soon as I could, and I ordered the works! Having a baby can sure work up your appetite!

After I ate, the Doc (a new Doc since the night before) came in to check on me. She said she would discharge me right then, but then we would have to wait for the Pediatrician on call to discharge Hazel. We thought we would be home by noon...

Jacob called and said he and the kids were on their way. I got Hazel all prettified in the headband her brother had picked out for her to wear. I let him pick out all of her clothes for our hospital bag, and he even made sure I packed some cozy pajamas and at least two different headbands for her. It was so cute how proud he was to pick out her outfits :)  Anyway, I got her all ready to meet her big brother and big sister, and of course took some pictures of her while we waited. Jacob was a little slower moving helping both kids get dressed, and himself dressed - with his freshly broken arm (and it's his dominate one).

After waiting for a while, she got hungry and then tired so fell asleep. She slept through their whole visit!

The kids were beyond excited to meet their sister. They knew she was bringing them a present for her birthday, and they had a few little gifts for her as well. They were so sweet with her! Sawyer is really gentle, and Aspen is really excited and not quite as gentle (unintentionally) but oh the looks on their faces as they finally met the baby we'd been talking about forEVER!

Such a joyful time!

Hazel hadn't been checked out yet, so I sent Jacob home with the kids so they could get some lunch and have their naps. The Pediatrician took her sweeeet time getting to work that particular Saturday, so we didn't get to go home until late afternoon. In the meantime, my wonderful friend came to spend a couple of hours with me and Hazel. Allegra was Hazel's one and only special visitor besides her family :) - thanks Allegra, for keeping us company! AND as Allegra was holding Hazel, she opened her eyes and gave her the very first smile :)  Very sweet!

After Allegra left, Hazel and I just hung out, waiting to go home. I couldn't help but get the camera out while she sweetly slept. I finally found these little felt flowers I had made to stick on her head (I had looked and looked in my bag but couldn't find them earlier) so I put one on and took a few pictures of her, not yet one day old.

Later, our family came and took us home - we stopped by the Taco Truck on the way home to grab some dinner. We went home and it felt so good to be home with the people I love most in this world. And before we went to bed, we talked about the cake we would make to celebrate Hazel's birthday and homecoming the next day. Oh, what a day!

Hazel's Birth Story

Hazel's birth story is a short and sweet one. She was simply ready to come - and had a "precipitous" birth, just like her sister, but even faster! I wasn't even sure if I was going into labor because I'd had just a few sporadic contractions, so once they did start coming, we had some friends come over to watch the kids. The surges never were very regular - so I had no idea if I was really in labor - it was kind of throwing me for a loop. But around 5pm, they got to the point that I felt most comfortable on the floor in a yoga pose, and so I decided to ask our friends to come over after they were done with work. I told them there was no rush. They arrived at our house about 6:30pm. Jacob talked to them a bit while I made my way towards the car. I said hello, and my friend, Layla, said "you look so composed" - as I wore flip flops and yoga pants and dashed towards our garage. I could imagine the situation looked much different than the movies make it look! As we were backing out of the garage, our neighbor started talking to Jacob, and I decided we should probably just get GOING. We took off to the birth center - which was about five minutes from our townhouse - and as we entered the surges (contractions) were suddenly like a minute apart. I had to stop and get down in my favorite yoga pose (child's pose) in the hallway, and then stop again at the front desk and do the same thing. The nurse said "let's hurry to your room" and I said "let's RUN!"

We got to the room and I got up on the bed for another surge. Through my breathing I asked the nurse if she thought I'd have time to get in the jacuzzi tub (something I've done with both previous births and loved). She didn't really have time to answer - I barely had time to kick off my flip flops and get my yoga pants off because all of a sudden I felt my baby COMING! I barely had time to get my yoga pants off before Hazel came bursting out into the world! We had been at the birth center approximately 10 minutes. She was born at 6:59pm. I surprised myself and pushed her out while on my hands and knees - and as the Doctor on call came running into the room, she didn't even have time to get her special gear on. I pushed once and my water broke and the next time, she was out! I felt like even if I didn't push at all, she would've just swooshed out with the water! Still, I did tear (again - I've torn every time!). They told me I tear in the same spot because it's already weakened, but mostly because I have such quick deliveries. The nurse laughed and said, "to answer your question, NO I don't think you'll have time to get in the jacuzzi!" She also said "I just love it when we have to admit people AFTER the baby has arrived!" We didn't have time to do anything! It happened so fast, Jacob was kind of stunned. It was quick, but so bearable. I can honestly say that it was a delightful labor and delivery! As I rolled over and she was placed on my chest, suddenly I remembered: "Hey! Get the camera out! We need some pictures!" I had asked Jacob to actually photograph the birth this time, to give him something to do since I tend to be very inward during the whole process. But the labor and birth happened so fast, he missed it! Not to mention, he broke his arm the evening before, so it was pretty painful for him to pick up my big heavy camera - but he did anyway to capture the moments right after Hazel came earth side and entered our eternal family.

We literally called our friends who were watching our children about 20 minutes after leaving the house and told them the news, and to tell the kids their sister had arrived :) We spent time with Hazel and then called/texted family and friends and once she was all cleaned up and settled I put a headband on her and took a picture to send out.  I had permission to go home before midnight - but the pediatrician wasn't around that late to check Hazel out and there was no way I was going home without my baby. So, Hazel and I had a little slumber party at the birth center that night. The birth center served us a "celebration" dinner before Jacob went home for the night. We clanked our goblets together, full of bubbly sparkling cider - "Cheers! Way to go, team!" And then we agreed that next time we have a baby we had better go early so we aren't the ones having a baby on the side of the road! Ha!

I couldn't sleep, I was too excited. A new baby is WAY better than Christmas, and I still can hardly sleep, I just love holding her, cuddling her, looking at her, and listening to her cute little breathing and newborn noises.

So, here are the images my special photographer took (thanks Jacob!) to capture Hazel's grand arrival. We feel so very blessed and lucky to have another sweet baby girl join our family. Her brother and sister just can't get enough - and neither can we. She's super tiny, and just perfect :)
